This 223 Rem cartridge’s bullet weighs perfectly normal at 55 grains. The bullet itself is a step above a full metal jacket, however. As Hornady’s own hollow point, it features a streamlined profile, uniformly thick jacket, and lead core that is precisely contoured to the interior of the surrounding jacket. The aperture in the HP’s tip allowed Hornady to insert molten lead inside the jacket so it could harden into a rearward-situated and balanced core. The nose cavity does not initiate terminal expansion, however, which makes the HP the wrong kind of bullet for hunting anything other than varmints.

This reloadable round’s clean-burning powder accelerates its bullet to a velocity of approximately 3,240 fps before it departs from a 24” barrel. Its 0.254 G1 BC means that the bullet conserves its momentum efficiently enough to reach 200 yards in about one-fifth of a second – and only drop to -3.76” once it has flown another 100 yards downrange.
