The vast majority of 7.62×39 ammunition on the market is made overseas and loaded with bimetal jacketed FMJ projectiles. That’s no good if you (A) insist on buying American, (B) intend to fire at a range which bans magnetic bullets, or (C) want to hunt medium game.

This ammo, right here? It’s made in America by Winchester. It’s loaded with steel-free bullets. Its bullets are also soft points, which deliver that terminal expansion that makes short and sweet work of any medium game. Pretty much the opposite of the steel-cased Russian-made 7.62×39 most AK lovers are already familiar with!

This round’s 123 grain projectile is the Power-Point: an SP of Winchester’s own creation which combines excellent accuracy, deep penetration and quick knock-down power. Its 0.244 G1 ballistic coefficient enables the SP to strike 200 yards with over 800 ft lbs of energy. Obviously not the same kind of impact as a 300 Win Mag, but still effective for taking hogs and deer with reasonably good shot placement. The Power-Point is also suitable for defensive applications – perfect if you have adopted a Soviet-style strategy for home defense.
