Federal Premium could have loaded this elk-slayer with any bullet. They chose the Hornady ELD-X, because it combines match accuracy and massive takedown into one elegant (and heavy) 178 grain package.
The ELD-X meets air head on with its most interesting feature: its Heat Shield polymer tip, which showcases Hornady’s new patented Drag Variability Reduction Technology meplat (flat, to simultaneously improve drag uniformity and decrease dispersion; 0.552 G1 BC). The Heat Shield is invincible in the face of aerodynamic friction. It remains unchanged until impact.
Impact changes the Heat Shield a great deal, however. That’s when the hard tip smashes through the ELD-X’s attenuated jacket rim to deliver reliable expansion, even past the 400-yard line. The ELD-X can easily take its prey at much closer ranges, where its InterLock ring secures its jacket to its core to support higher weight retention.
