Details
The Gold Dot bullet is a bonded soft point. Between its alloyed lead core and electrochemically fused copper jacket, the Gold Dot is exceptionally rugged. That enables it to remain mostly intact if it has to pierce many barriers before it can reach its target. Even if the bullet pierces sheet metal at close range, it still retains ~46% of its weight and penetrates ballistic gel to a depth of 11.25”. Actual results may vary, but Speer’s data do describe a bullet which very reliably penetrates to an effective depth for defense.
The Gold Dot bullet also excels at the other half of terminal ballistics: expansion. It can double its original diameter in ballistic gel even after it has pierced sheet metal, and expansion after penetration of thick clothing is often closer to 2.5X.
Speer Gold Dot 223 is still effective in SBRs with barrels down to 10”, and its terminal performance is consistent within 200 yards. This ammo’s brass cases are plated with low-friction and corrosion-resistant nickel. Its propellant is low-flash, which will help keep maintain your visual on the target while you’re firing at night.
