To some shooters, it’s a foregone conclusion that shell casings must be made of brass. Those shooters are mistaken. It’s also possible to make cases out of steel, which has the extremely welcome effect of making ammunition significantly more affordable.

But there’s yet another copper-alloy component that steel can take the place of: bullet jackets! Make an FMJ with a steel jacket, and you make the ammunition even more affordable yet.

Sterling of Turkey already knows all of this, as fully evidenced by this 9mm practice and plinking ammunition. Its cases aren’t reloadable. Its bullets attract a magnet. But so long as you can make do with those shortcomings, it’ll be smooth sailing to savings town (population: you).

There is some corrosive steel-cased ammunition on the market. You’re not currently looking at an example of it. You’re also not looking at 9mm +P, because Sterling designs these cartridges to generate chamber pressure lower than 35,000 psi.
